Creating a Better Board

It’s amazing to me the number of nonprofit organizations which have a non-working board. Often, less than half show up to meetings and few of them do more than that. I believe this is a result of believing that our friends, close associates and colleagues or even family members would be good board members because of our relationship. No matter how good the relationship, there is more to consider than this. Although this can be a good place to start, there are other things to consider when vetting new board members and there are several questions to ask yourself and potential board members as you move forward in the process.

• What sort of influence and affluence does he/she have in your community?
• What is his/her expertise? Does this person fill a need within the board or on a committee?
• Does this person have the time to not only be present at meetings, but to attend events, volunteer with your organization, and be an advocate within your community?
• Is he/she already a donor or willing to become a donor? All your board members should be giving to your cause as it lends legitimacy.
• Does this person have the talent to serve on a board? Do they have experience serving on other boards?
• Is this person passionate about your mission? Will they become a champion for the organization?
• How does your board measure up?

Only when we begin to consider elements other than personal relationship will we truly build a board of individuals that will become champions for our organization.
